POSITION: Hazardous Waste Supervisor
SEASON: Austral Summer (Oct 2025 - Feb 2026)
LOCATION: McMurdo Station, Antarctica
SECTOR/DEPT: Six Mile, LLC Antarctica
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinate with Hazardous Waste Manager to set priority for department
2. Ensure all incoming employees receive proper training, and maintain a log of this information
3. Coordinate with other departments to ensure efficient pick up and processing of hazardous waste
4. Daily tasking and supervision of department
5. Assist with writing mid- and post-season evaluation for the crew
6. Attend weekly meetings in the event of Hazardous Waste Manager's absence
7. Conduct community Waste Briefs or other informational sessions if necessary
8. Troubleshoot any issues that arise and elevate them to Hazardous Waste Manager as needed
9. Picking up hazardous waste and associated paperwork from various departments on station, assuring quality of information on Hazardous Waste Identification Sheet (HWIS)
10. Process waste accordingly. This includes marking, labeling, weighing, and storing the drums or items into a shipping container. Updating the HWIS form with any required information
11. Daily use of a drum dolly, pallet jack, banding equipment, power tools, shovels, and other tools.
12. Using the proper PPE for various tasks (correct gloves, respirator, safety glasses, etc.)
13. Perform certain classification qualitative testing on items (pH testing, flash point testing, etc.)
14. Lab packing
15. Safe operation of a M4K (Pickle)
16. Accurate input into hazardous waste tracking database
17. Quality check all shipping containers and correct discrepancies immediately
18. Follow all JHA's, and update them if needed
19. Assist the Solid Waste Department as needed
20. During Vessel and Tanker Operations, work 12 hour shifts, either day or night shift
21. Active member of the Spill Response Team:
22. Be on call 24-hours a day for approximately one week of each month
23. Be able to supply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if needed
24. Write spill reports, if applicable
25. Position requires constant physical activity, including bending, consistently lifting and carrying 50 - 70 lbs, reaching and gripping
26. Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities of the Waste department
27. Able to work in a team unit composed of diverse personalities
28. Displays self-motivation in physically challenging and atypical work environment; position is comprised of approximately 90% outdoor tasking
29. Able to maintain flexibility and positive attitude in a dynamic, fast-paced work setting
30. Performs duties in support of Operations Division metrics (as provided by supervisor)
31. Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, affected by this position's work activities
32. Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation
33. Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments
34. Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace
35. Perform other duties as required
36. Reports to Hazardous Waste Manager
REQUIREMENTS:
1. 2 years (or Ice seasons) of Waste Management experience
2. College degree (2 additional years of experience will substitute)
3. Strong computer software experience
4. Able to lift 50 pounds consistently and wear a respirator
5. Valid Driver's License and Passport
6. Ability to pass background check and drug screening. A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete; online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by National Science Foundation (NSF) Personnel Security.
PREFERRED:
1. 1 year of Hazardous Materials shipping/characterization or reporting experience OR 2 years of Environmental remediation.
2. 1 year of supervisory experience
3. 1 quarter of college General Chemistry
4. College degree in Chemistry or Environmental Science
5. OSHA HazWOPER 40-Hour, current
6. Familiarity with power tools and machinery
7. Equipment operating experience
