JOB DUTIES:
This position is responsible for the supervision of a full caseload of offenders, overseeing completion of specific conditions of probation/community control, coordinating and monitoring services with community-based treatment agencies, evaluating risk and needs to match offender services, monitoring payment of fines, costs, and restitution, and performing any other general duties as assigned.
This employee is responsible for investigating, counseling, and monitoring misdemeanor offenders referred by the court for supervision. The work activities of this position include data entry and written information for presentation to the court, along with the monitoring of individuals placed on reporting probation/community control. The officer assumes supervision of offenders granted probation/community control and reviews general conditions and specific sanctions imposed by the court.
Additionally, the officer performs all functions for pre- and post-sentence investigations including interviewing defendants, family members, and victims, making home and collateral contacts, identifying risks and needs of the probationer, making recommendations to the court regarding appropriate treatment and sanctions, and determining and monitoring payment of court-ordered restitution, fines, and costs.
Additional duties will be assigned as needed by the Chief Probation Officer and Deputy Director.
Employees must understand and follow county and departmental safety procedures, which includes handling of confidential information. The position requires moderate lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and bending. A bachelor’s degree is required in a criminal justice-related field. The PO I should have familiarity with supervision, counseling, decision-making, problem-solving methods, community resources, effective oral and written communication, and effective time management. Knowledge of office practices and procedures; ability to define problems, collect data, analyze circumstances, and draw appropriate conclusions; familiarity with data collection and statistical reporting; strong Windows-based computer skills (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook) and capability to efficiently learn new department-specific computer software programs and equipment are also required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should possess a BA/BS in corrections, psychology, sociology, or criminal justice-related fields. Experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, or surveillance is preferred; OPOTA training is a plus. Knowledge of basic office practices and procedures; ability to define problems, collect data, analyze circumstances, and draw appropriate conclusions; Windows-based computer skills and capability to efficiently learn new department-specific computer software programs and equipment are required. Employees must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
