The European Union is urging all European countries to set targets for their national smart meter rollouts by as early as 2012. The Energy Commissionar, Günther Oettinger, has outlined the goal on a special report on smart grids this week.
The paper entitled ""The Communication on Smart Grids"" outlines the EU views on the necessary steps for a pan-European rollout.
The report states that “without serious upgrading of existing grids and metering, renewable energy generation will be put on hold, security of the networks will be compromised, opportunities for energy saving and energy efficiency will be missed, and the internal energy market will develop at a much slower pace"".

Commitment to the smart cause - To show its commitment to the smart grid cause, the EU has stated that it is prepared to undertake various large-scale smart grid demonstration projects, promising to announce specific details at a later date this year. The paper has also reinforced the EU view on the importance of a regulatory framework to support deployments in the long run.

With the report, the EU has clearly indicated that it also expects all EU nations to have agreed on the complex and delicate question of interoperability of different systems. The European smart-deadline will also hope to see industry agreements related to data protection and consumer safeguards established.

Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista and a group of local investors revealed they are partnering with Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) to launch a power exchange in Brazil. Expansions in sight - The new energy trading platform's goal is to triple trading of contracts in Brazil's free energy market, with Brix expecting expand their offerings to the more than 1,400 companies allowed to trade in this marketplace, with consumers negotiating directly with suppliers to purchase any amount of energy.

The Brix founders have already announced plans to expand into neighbour Latin American coutnries, as well as expand their offerings to commodities such as oil, ethanol and biodisel.

Brazil's installed wind capacity could reach 3GW by as early as 2013, a new report from BNamericas has found.
The current 1GW capacity already positions Brazil as the wind power leader in Latin America, with half of its total capacity. The country lead is largerly atributed to its expertise in using wind technology, as well as favourable natural conditions and a consistent government incentive programme.

The Brazilian government's first State tender in 2009 awarded 71 wind farm projects (totaling 1.8GW). Two auctions followed in the first half of 2010, with 50 projects awarded to begin supplying in early 2013 (another 1.5GW added to the country's capacity), and 20 further projects with 528MW expected to be operational in the second half of 2013.

Proinfa, the government backed incentive programme for alternative energy, aims to increase the participation of energy produced from renewable sources in the Brazilian grid to 10% of total energy consumption in the next two decades.

In the past 10 years, the number of residential flats in the North has grown 3.5 times faster than in the rest of the country. Brazil today has 6.2 million flats, 43% more unitis than it had in 2000.

Today, one in 10 Brazilians are living in flats. The number falls by half in the North, but according to the Brazilian newspaper Estadão, growth in places such as Rondônia, Amapá and Tocantins has been huge. In those States, the number of flats has increased seven fold. Proportionally, 15 times more than São Paulo.
The increase of income and growth of employment and access to lending are the top reasons behind the Brazilian vertical housing boom, as well as the shortage of land in the biggest cities. With the momentum, global players in Civil Construction and Engineering as well as the broader real estate market have started eying Brazil as one of the top global markets today.
