The Planner Active School Travel staff person will be responsible for the overview, analysis, and reporting of Active School Travel across the Board's jurisdiction.
Major Responsibilities: To review policies, strategies and conceive programs to shift behaviour from driving to school and promote active and sustainable alternatives including school bus, public transit, and walking and cycling.To liaise with Board staff to promote and implement various active school travel programs as well as identify required resources or infrastructure enhancements to support active school travel initiatives.To organize and promote travel awareness campaigns that include supporting schools with various sustainable travel initiatives such as a Safety Campaign and encouraging schools to take part in national campaigns such as International Walk to School Month (IWALK), Winter Walk Day, and Bike to School Week.To represent the School Board on various committees and working groups and other meetings as required.To work closely with other community stakeholders (such as municipal government, local health/medical organizations, environmental organizations, law enforcement, parent councils) to establish and build capacity for active transportation systems with the community.To gather and analyze data, prepare reports and proposals, and coordinate initiatives to shift student and parent behavior towards sustainable modes.Education, Experience, and Qualifications: A four-year University degree in Health Promotion, Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Studies, or equivalent, as approved by the Board.Minimum of three years experience in the delivery of AST presentations, training, and education programs.Experience with traffic calming or traffic congestion issues considered an asset.Working knowledge and understanding of the theories, concepts, principles, best practices, and techniques in the field of Transportation Demand Management (TDM), Active Transportation including School Travel Planning.Basic knowledge of safety legislations and guidelines such as Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM), TAC, etc.

Effectiveness in promoting TDM, and presenting and conveying issues, ideas, and concepts to a variety of stakeholders.Ability to see longer-term implications and effects of recommendations, options, and approaches.Must possess a valid driver's license and access to own transportation.
