As a Database Architect at Quorum, you will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the foundation of our data infrastructure. You’ll ensure that our systems are scalable, performant, and reliable—spanning multiple database engines and technologies including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redshift, MSSQL, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, and OpenSearch. You’ll also be the go-to expert on AWS DMS, leading complex data migrations and transformations across our platform.
You’ll collaborate closely with Engineering, Product, and Data teams to ensure that our architecture enables innovation, supports search and analytics features, and adheres to modern best practices in database engineering.
What You'll Do
* First Week: You’ll begin familiarizing yourself with our existing database architecture.
* First Month: You’ll take ownership of key database systems and support ongoing AWS DMS-based migration projects.
* First Six Months: You’ll lead the design and implementation of improvements to Quorum’s database and search infrastructure across relational and search engines.
* First Year: You’ll help guide the evolution of Quorum’s data platform by setting architectural direction, improving performance at scale, and mentoring other engineers on database best practices.
About You
* You have a strong foundation in database architecture and engineering, and care deeply about designing scalable, secure, and performant systems.
* You’re a self-starter who thrives in an ownership-driven environment and enjoys working across teams to solve complex challenges.
* You’re curious and passionate about continuous learning—always looking for ways to optimize and improve data systems.
* You’re motivated by impact, enjoy solving technical puzzles, and want to work in a collaborative and fast-paced startup environment.
* You take pride in writing clean, maintainable code and mentoring others to do the same.
What would we like to see in You
* 4+ years of experience in database architecture, administration, or engineering at a software-driven organization.
* Proven experience with multiple database engines such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, DynamoDB, Redshift, and more.
* Strong command of AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) for schema conversion, task configuration, replication, and data validation.
* Experience designing and managing search platforms using Elasticsearch and OpenSearch, including schema design, cluster management, and query optimization.
* Design, develop, and manage ETL processes using SSIS to support daily data integration and transformation activities. Utilize advanced strategies to handle complex data transformations efficiently.
* Configure and maintain SQL Server replication, including Snapshot, Transactional, and Merge replication, to ensure reliable and consistent data distribution across systems.
* Proficiency with SQL and strong database design skills, including normalization, indexing, and performance tuning.
* Prepared to operate in high-demand environments, effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and actively participate in incident response and mitigation efforts during and outside of standard business hours.
* Ability to independently lead technical projects and mentor others on database architecture and search engine best practices.
* Experience working with Python, Django, and AWS is a plus.
* Bonus: Familiarity with data warehousing, CI/CD for database infrastructure, data governance frameworks, and Infrastructure-as-Code.
About the DevOps Team
* We’re a fast-growing team that is dedicated to improving our people, processes, and platform. The multi-cultural team is composed of a DevOps team, the software engineering team, the Product Management team, the Product Design team, and an Information Security team.
* We support many different products but internally think of them as one system with a single unified codebase. Our goal is to build centralized systems that handle complex problems for multiple features and products.
* We’re focused on doing the important things the right way -- we write solid documentation, test our code well, design for scale, and follow defined software development processes.
* We follow best-in-class security practices to safeguard our data and application against bad actors. We regularly test and update processes and technology to fight complacency, because we know good security is a continuous effort.
* We curate high-quality datasets that are essential for effective mapping and tracking of the government and public affairs spaces. Our datasets underpin our promise to give users the information necessary to make smart decisions that influence policy.
* We set rigorous quality standards and monitor them with a mix of programmatic and manual verifications to ensure users maintain a high degree of trust in our systems.
* We’re very close as a team and invest not only in each others’ skills and careers but also in building real relationships with one another: product development is a team sport and we believe that it’s better (and more fun) to work on a team of people that you know well and care about.
* We work in a vibrant, sunlit space in our modern, open concept office.
