Position Summary:
The Air Transportation Specialist III is responsible for supervising airfield cargo operations for the US Antarctic Program (USAP), ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant handling of cargo and passengers. This role includes overseeing the loading and unloading of aircraft, supervising cargo teams, and ensuring operational safety and regulatory adherence. The Air Transportation Specialist III is also tasked with maintaining excellent communication with flight crews, cargo teams, and other stakeholders, while stepping into the supervisory role when the Airfield Shift Supervisor is unavailable.
Position Responsibilities:
* Supervisory Responsibilities:
o Directly supervises airfield cargo teams, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
o Leads teams in aircraft loading and unloading operations, overseeing the proper use of automated and manual material handling equipment.
o Provides input and feedback for performance evaluations at the end of the season.
o Conducts training and mentoring for cargo teams, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
o Assumes supervisory responsibility for airfield operations in the absence of the Airfield Shift Supervisor.
* Airfield Operations:
o Oversees the safe and efficient loading and unloading of aircraft, coordinating with flight crews, cargo & shuttles staff, and vehicle operators to ensure smooth operations.
o Serves as the primary Point of Contact (POC) for aircraft loading/unloading operations.
o Ensures that all cargo documentation, packaging, labeling, and marking requirements are met.
o Monitors cargo movement and pallet building, conducting quality control throughout the process.
o Verifies eligibility of cargo and ensures it meets all safety and regulatory requirements.
o Performs checks on arriving cargo, documenting discrepancies such as damage or shortages.
o Secures cargo with appropriate devices and equipment, adhering to USAF regulations.
* Safety and Compliance:
o Adheres to safety protocols in handling hazardous materials, special cargo, and mail.
o Ensures proper loading and compatibility of hazardous material according to transportation regulations.
o Participates in and leads safety meetings, ensuring safety remains a top priority.
o Conducts safety checks and audits, correcting safety concerns as they arise.
* Equipment and Maintenance:
o Conducts routine checks and maintenance on automated and manual material handling equipment.
o Ensures equipment is maintained and properly inventoried, coordinating repairs as needed.
* Other Duties:
o Assists in the preparation and shipment of cargo and equipment on and off-continent.
o Performs other duties as required by management.
Required Education, Experience, Certificates, and Licenses:
* High School diploma or GED
* Minimum of two years’ experience in freight movement, including documentation, expediting, tracking, and hazardous material transportation.
* Airfield operations experience.
* Minimum of one year leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to manage diverse teams.
Expected Skills and Competencies:
* In-depth knowledge of cargo and passenger movement, aircraft capabilities, load plans, and airlift regulations, ideally in remote polar regions.
* Proficiency in the operation of material handling equipment and cargo securing devices.
* Ability to communicate effectively with all personnel, including aircrews, cargo teams, and supervisors.
* Excellent attention to detail, particularly in safety compliance and cargo documentation.
Preferred:
* Minimum of one season of experience working in the Transportation and Logistics (T&L) department or related areas in Antarctica.
* Familiarity with automated data processing/cargo tracking programs such as MAXIMO, ICODES, and Microsoft Office software.
* Working knowledge of US Air Force loading regulations (dash 9).
* Previous experience with remote site and/or polar logistics operations.
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
* Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
* Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica.
* Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer.
* Must be able to lift and move items up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
* Must be able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold.
* Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
