Summary:
Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Plumber Foreman will supervise and perform plumbing maintenance or construction tasking, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor or Assistant Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking is based on ASC schedule requirements.
Position Responsibilities (not all inclusive):
1. Supervise the activities of Facilities Plumbers and Pipefitters
2. Supervise and perform hands-on cutting, fitting, connection, and installation of plumbing piping, equipment, fixtures, and systems in compliance with the Uniform Plumbing Code
3. Supervise and perform hands-on diagnosis, repair, and scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing plumbing systems, equipment, fixtures, and infrastructure
4. Maintain various plumbing systems both inside and outside of buildings
5. Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside normal working hours
6. Maintain effective communication between departments and represent department as needed at operational meetings
7. Assist with ensuring accurate material and labor charge code use, and accurate timecard submittal
8. Interact with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person
9. Accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved
10. Advise supervisor of job progress, material/labor requirements, and personnel matters
11. Accomplish tasking working from Job Plans, verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable specifications and codes.
12. Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directed
13. Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weather
14. Routinely utilize independent judgment and discretion to identify potential issues and solve problems
15. Proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicate them effectively
16. Work directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking
17. Learn and utilize computer-based labor, material, and maintenance tracking applications
18. May deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods (McMurdo Only)
19. Evaluate labor and material needs for tasking and assign duties to subordinate staff as appropriate
20. Interpret schedules, design drawings, specifications and diagrams to carry out tasking
21. Routinely inspect worksites and evaluate staff tasking
22. Ensure staff attendance of required trainings and maintain records of departmental trainings
23. Evaluate and identify job hazards and effectively communicate information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and daily crew meetings
24. Responsible for providing timely performance feedback to staff and timely submission of end-of-season evaluations to Human Resources
25. Provide suggestions and recommendations for re-hiring, termination and advancement of staff
26. Works with Human Resources to address conflict or personnel issues as they arise
27. Handle confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism
28. Communicate professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, Quality Assurance procedures, and safety practices
29. Assist with the ordering of resupply materials for the department to maintain adequate inventory on station
30. Access, review, and approve employee Costpoint timesheets and Maximo Work Orders
31. Occasionally utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or assist other trades or departments with their tasking
32. Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements
33. Implement and maintain Work Center Safety Program and participate in ASC safety objectives
34. Participate in community programs such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (station clean-up), “GASH” (galley clean-up at Palmer), and recycling efforts
35. Perform other duties as required
Required Education, Experience, Certificates, and Licenses:
1. High School diploma or GED
2. A current Journeyman Plumber license (8,000 hour), or a current Master Plumber license, or equivalent Union membership in good standing.
3. Minimum six years of documented experience in all phases of the plumbing trade including piping, fixture installation, and service, repair, design and layout of plumbing systems
4. Must have been in a lead, Foreman, or supervisory position for a minimum of two of the six years of experience
Expected Skills and Competencies:
1. Thorough knowledge of the principles of plumbing and the current Uniform Plumbing Code
2. Ability to diagnose, maintain, adjust, repair, and replace plumbing systems and components
3. Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and drawings
4. Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications
5. Possess the competencies, willingness, and ability to perform the duties of position
Preferred:
1. Experience working with a variety of pipe materials and fittings such as (but not limited to): copper, PEX, PVC, Galvanized Steel, Black Iron, Glass-fiber Reinforced Epoxy (GRE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
2. Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of hydronic piping systems
3. Experience in construction and maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities
4. Certification as Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester
5. Certification as Backflow Prevention Assembly Repairer
6. Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management System
7. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
1. Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
2. Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
3. Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
4. Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
5. Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
6. Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
7. Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
8. Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
9. Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
