We are looking for a Field Scientist to oversee field operations and trials in northern Paraná State or Southern Sao Paulo (depending on the location of residency). This role involves leading data collection and curation for soil aqueous, climate and crop datasets, as well as maintaining experimental devices like soil moisture sensors, lysimeters, and weather stations. The candidate will collaborate with scientists, product managers, and farmers, ensuring field protocols are followed, and samples are properly prepared and shipped to labs.
Location: 100 km radius around Dourados (Mato Grosso do Sul)
Language: Portuguese and English.
Role Responsibilities:
* Lead Ground Science activities and supervise operations and execution of field trials for experiments.
* Oversee data collection and curation of soil solution, weather, and crop (biomass and grain yield) datasets.
* Maintain and monitor experimental devices such as soil moisture sensors, lysimeters, and weather stations.
* Manage or execute sample preparation (soil moisture, soil pore water, and crop) and ensure shipment to labs.
* Write and review field protocols and methodologies.
* Communicate directly with chief scientists and product managers in English.
* Collaborate with science and sampling teams, and coordinate with farmers or farm advisors on field logistics (fertilization, herbicide applications, harvest, etc.)
Background & Requirements:
* PhD in Agriculture Science, Soil Science, Environmental Sciences, Geosciences, or related field showcasing experience in field/trial experimentation and people’s supervision.
* Extensive expertise in agronomy and soil science, with over 5 years of experience.
* Proven experience in collecting and managing large trial, field (at farm level) datasets, with at least 3 years of hands-on expertise.
* Experience with large databases and data analysis.
* Ability to write in English and demonstrated experience publishing papers in high-impact journals.
* Strong communicator who can present scientific work to various audiences, including government leaders and local communities and collaborate across disciplines.
* Proactive problem-solver and have a strong attention to detail but with focus to get high quality ground data for scientific purposes.
* Experience with soil solid and soil aqueous time series datasets and carbon removal projects.
* Demonstrated industry experience.
* Must have a valid driver’s license.
What does success in this role look like?
* Travel to the field trials once per week/10 days and work together with the ground team members to get high quality ground data.
* Engage with farmers and farm advisors.
* Discriminate and classify data sources of different quality levels.
* Solve logistics problems in the field which directly affects the data quality.
* Create data pipelines for data collection and curation.
* Have strong capability to understand complex protocols and methodologies and adapt our field experiments and deployments to be compliant with them.
* Work as part of a multicultural and multidisciplinary team of agronomists, geologists, data scientists, biochemists, modelers, engineers and product developers.
