The Opportunity We are currently seeking a General Manager (GM), Commercial to join our Leadership Team in St. John’s, NL. Relocation to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador will be required for this role. This is a permanent position, working Monday to Friday in the St. John’s, NL office. The primary purpose of the Commercial GM role is to drive the effectiveness of Vale Newfoundland and Labrador’s (VNL) finance and supply chain teams, ensuring sustainable value generation from VNL assets. Reporting directly to the Director of VNL Operations, the role collaborates with the leadership team to address operational challenges while shaping and executing strategies that optimize financial and supply chain performance. Additionally, in this position you will: Oversee strategy, governance, and execution of support functions, including commercial accounting, procurement, contract management, inbound logistics, warehousing, and land/site services. Drive financial integrity and operational efficiency, ensuring alignment of financial objectives with operational goals. Optimize costs, budgets, financial reporting, and compliance with regulatory standards across all Newfoundland and Labrador sites. Lead multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of challenge, opportunity, and recognition to achieve high performance. Support the Director of VNL and International Refineries in evaluating business models, capital initiatives, and operational improvements, providing critical insights for complex decision-making. Champion stakeholder engagement to facilitate a turnaround in financial and supply chain management, emphasizing the social aspects of change and building consensus across all levels of the organization. Responsible for Land management for all non-operational properties (including land leases and property management, land disposals, property tax, and assessment issues). This role is instrumental in delivering results in HSER, enhancing productivity, and ensuring the supply chain effectively supports the business while enabling sustainable growth. About You Education: A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business or a related field. A CPA professional certification and/or an MBA is preferred. Experience: A minimum of 15 years of experience in mining, oil and gas or a heavy industrial environment is required. Proven experience in executive or senior leadership roles, including managing cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams in complex, unionized environments. Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines in dynamic environments with a continuous improvement mindset. Skills: Exceptional analytical and strategic skills, with the ability to drive change while maintaining operational continuity. Advanced skills in financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis. Extensive knowledge of finance, procurement, logistics, warehousing processes, and ERP systems, including financial software. Expertise in regulatory requirements and industry best practices in finance, procurement, and logistics. Strong understanding of process technology/engineering practices, technical, financial processes, and governance. Strong leadership abilities to foster collaboration, build cross-functional relationships, and deliver results through strategic goal setting and resource alignment. High emotional intelligence, business acumen, and organizational savvy enabling empathetic leadership and a supportive work environment.
