Hazardous Waste Supervisor Position
This is a seasonal position, specifically designed for the Austral Summer season (October 2025 to February 2026). The successful candidate will be based at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Coordinate with the Hazardous Waste Manager to set priorities for the department.
* Ensure that all incoming employees receive proper training, and maintain a log of this information.
* Coordinate with other departments to ensure efficient pick up and processing of hazardous waste.
* Daily tasking and supervision of the department.
* Assist with writing mid- and post-season evaluations for the crew.
* Attend weekly meetings in the event of the Hazardous Waste Manager's absence.
* Conduct community Waste Briefs or other informational sessions if necessary.
* Troubleshoot any issues that arise and elevate them to the Hazardous Waste Manager as needed.
* Pick up hazardous waste and associated paperwork from various departments on station, ensuring quality of information on the Hazardous Waste Identification Sheet (HWIS).
* Process waste accordingly, including marking, labeling, weighing, and storing drums or items into a shipping container. Update the HWIS form with any required information.
* Daily use of a drum dolly, pallet jack, banding equipment, power tools, shovels, and other tools.
* Use proper PPE for various tasks (correct gloves, respirator, safety glasses, etc.).
* Perform certain classification qualitative testing on items (pH testing, flash point testing, etc.).
* Lab packing.
* Safe operation of a M4K (Pickle).
* Accurate input into the hazardous waste tracking database.
* Quality check all shipping containers and correct discrepancies immediately.
* Follow all JHA's, and update them if needed.
* Assist the Solid Waste Department as needed.
* During Vessel and Tanker Operations, work 12-hour shifts, either day or night shift.
* Active member of the Spill Response Team.
* Be on call 24-hours a day for approximately one week of each month.
* Supply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if needed.
* Write spill reports, if applicable.
* The position requires constant physical activity, including bending, consistently lifting and carrying 50 - 70 lbs, reaching, and gripping.
* Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities of the Waste department.
* Able to work in a team unit composed of diverse personalities.
* Performs duties in support of Operations Division metrics (as provided by supervisor).
* Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position's work activities.
* Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
* Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.
* Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
* Perform other duties as required.
* Reports to the Hazardous Waste Manager.
Requirements:
* Two years (or ice seasons) of Waste Management experience.
* College degree (two additional years of experience will substitute).
* Strong computer software experience.
* Able to lift 50 pounds consistently and wear a respirator.
* Valid Driver's License and Passport.
* Ability to pass background check and drug screening. A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards, and provide additional details and information as requested by National Science Foundation (NSF) Personnel Security.
Preferred:
* One year of Hazardous Materials shipping/characterization or reporting experience OR two years of Environmental remediation.
* One year of supervisory experience.
* One quarter of college General Chemistry.
* College degree in Chemistry or Environmental Science.
* OSHA HazWOPER 40-Hour, current.
* Familiarity with power tools and machinery.
* Equipment operating experience.
